VA does not add ratings together. This calculator applies 38 CFR 4.25: ratings are ordered greatest first, each applies only to the efficiency remaining, and rounding to the nearest 10% happens once, at the end.

Why ratings are not simply added
A person cannot be more than 100% able-bodied in this method. A 60% rating leaves 40% efficiency. A further 30% rating takes 30% of that remaining 40% — 12 points — for a combined value of 72%, not 90%. That is the example in 38 CFR 4.25 itself.
Worked check from the regulation: 50% and 30% combine to 65%, which converts to 70%. And 40% and 20% combine to 52%, which converts to 50%. Both are in the test suite for this site.
